[13] [14] The first public version of the game, used a combination of three-dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. It was released as a beta version on January 4, 2001 and was originally from their parents' house in Nottingham. [2] In December 2001, Gower brothers with Constant Tedder formed Jagex to take over the business aspects of running RuneScape [11]. Among the early innovations, developed an interpreted Jagex domain-specific scripting language called runies script as used by the server RuneScape event management. [15] On February 27, 2002 a monthly membership service was introduced, giving access to additional features, including new areas, missions, and items that are not free to users [11].

As the game has more users Jagex began planning major changes. [16], the developers copied the game engine creates a new version of the player with a full three-dimensional images, the so-called second RuneScape A beta of RuneScape 2 was released to paying members for a test program beginning on the first in December 2003 and ends on 29 March 2004. [12] After the official release, RuneScape 2 was renamed RuneScape, and the older version of the game was kept online, known as RuneScape Classic. On January 12, 2006 Jagex banned more than 5000 Classic accounts for fraud. To prevent further fraud, RuneScape Classic was closed to new accounts, and access is limited to accounts that had played Classic at least once between August 3, 2005 and January 12, 2006.
